I agree that the ability to deal with a variety of formats makes things more complicated. I have Navionics, Max-Sea, and C-Map charts on pieces of gear. Use to have Nobeltec's Explorer series charts. ALL are for US locations (with some Caribbean and border Canadian and Mexican extensions).
I've found that the Raster Charts, actually are slower because they quilt smaller scale areas as you page through areas quickly. The PC at the Nav Station, which has a lot of RAM, and electronic hard drive running through a Intel I7 processor doesn't seem to care. The chart plotters don't work like that unit. ;^)))
