In a press conference this morning, they admitted the simple failure to zoom in sufficiently was the cause...

"Human error", pure and simple... They simply thought they were sailing over a "seamount", minimum depths of 40 meters... Sounds like they only zoomed into about the range pictured below...

Seems obvious no reference to a paper chart was ever made... As mentioned elsewhere, the British Admiralty chart of the Western Part of the entire Indian Ocean shows Cocos Island, and the lighthouse upon it...
