His mistake, as he says. He checks on paper as well.

He claims his mistake was being un prepared due to short notice. That's understandable. lots of factors, as always. I bet he will have a better system of 'zooming' and keeping better track of hazards on the charts.

Not a problem(zooming), for everyone but he should use the navigation tools he's confident with. Despite the tight schedule, why didn't his paper chart reveal the hazard? I'm also surprised someone else(crew) aboard didn't see the reef on an iPhone or tablet. Other boats obviously saw the reef.

In your case, it doesn't sound like the laptop works as well as it does for others. Understandable, paper charting works as it always has.

Paper' isn't as fast or as accurate as E charts, for me, especially on an overview, but everyone is different.
