And if that was your only CP, you could just want the big picture.
But it's become intuitive to me to have the small picture as a priority, I guess because I'm aware of what is missing when the CP is zoomed out. I wouldn't trust the big picture for very long, anywhere so would spend my time on the small picture, zooming out to check course, occasionally.
Today the high tech boats have several screens(and each crew likely has one, or more). Some of those are touch screens or otherwise invite you to easily size the chart through broad areas down to the critical-as small as 100 yards or so- world that you're actually moving through.
For racers, I would think the small picture is very important for small course changes due to lifts, headers, etc.
These days I have both pictures going simaltaneously. I love a comfortable scale for my speed that's optimally sized for hazards and sailing/tacking angles in easy sight-that's first priority.
The big picture(on an ipad), always changes(easily) to suit the area. And plus a third or fourth screen(on a small handheld/smart phone) can serve other piloting tasks or for planning(change of plans) while underway.
Thanks for keeping us involved in your Bahama cruise again, Chris. It's about 30 and raining today in Rockport.
