I've been on the road continuously for the past few weeks so haven't been able to follow the discussion too carefully. But the overall notion that the instruments aren't presenting the most critical data ('rocks ahead') effectively to a time-constrained navigator is spot on. Until electronics get a lot better I will always have large-scale charts aboard and use them. I don't mind relying on electronics and cruising guides to get me into port, but for passages where there is anything but open ocean it helps to have a paper chart.
