VESTAS ran up onto a reef within a mile or two of the LIGHTHOUSE on Cocos Island/Ile du Sud... Now, chances are good that light might not have been functioning, or burning very dim, or perhaps it no longer even exists...
However, pictured below is British Admiralty chart 4072, the Indian Ocean - Western Part... The ENTIRE route of Leg 2 - Capetown to Abu Dhabi is contained within this single chart... And, Cocos Island, and that lighthouse, are shown on that chart...
And yet, neither show up on the C-Map shown in my previous post, at a far higher level level of zoom... That is absolutely mind-boggling, to me...
Much of the discussion of this incident centers around the apparent failure to zoom IN to a sufficient degree... The point I'm trying to make is that it may very well have been a case of doing quite the opposite, the failure to see the forest thru the trees/get the Big Picture by zooming OUT... And, by far the easiest way to do that, is to look over the route on a large paper chart spread out in front of you...
Well, at least it is, for me... (grin)
