5 minutes of "look forward" is less than 2 miles. I think that when you're moving that fast, having a soggy paper chart in a cockpit or down below is not exactly a perfect solution either.
Tools, including paper charts, are just there to do what you need to get done. You have to either work with what you've got, get the "right" tool, OR change what you're doing. Sometimes, the right solution is slow down.
Islands, navigational marks, rocks, etc. really are fixed objects. There is no substitution for using the tools to avoid hitting one of those -- whatever it takes. Hitting a floating or submerged object is a somewhat different story. Having two screens, one with multiple window capability, it a very convenient thing. But you have to use it. Having one large CURRENT paper chart maybe more reliable, if less convenient or accessible in some circumstances. But it's not the tool that is the issue.
A screwdriver will work to pry open items -- but only to a point (no pun intended) ;^)))
Anyway, I've got to get back into my Amazon Kindle to continue reading my "book". I wonder in how many years the root of the word 'book' will be a associated with some bound paper produced by a printing device and stored on shelves? Mummies anyone?
