but it does seem there is some value in going over the entire intended route (and potential diversions) before setting off. Do this on paper or digital, whatever shows every hazard, then draw boxes around nasty shallow stuff -- if the race organizers can draw no-go boxes to avoid pirates, etc., surely the boat's navigator can do that too. Then, if the boat sails into a box, an alarm goes off: "Danger, danger, Will Robinson."
Given the speed these boats sail at, you need a pretty big box -- 20-25 miles -- to give the navigator plenty of time to take the necessary action.
From my armchair here, it all seems so easy!
