Hand in hand with that is another trend...

Owners that are incapable of doing even the most fundamental repairs. They are good at signing work orders and checks. That may be fine for day sailing and local trips but as boats get bigger and more complex small problems can escalate quickly. The loss of autopilot on that 50 ffoter being singlehanded mid-ocean could turn into a very serious situation.

When I started cruising about 20 years ago almost everyone I met did a most or all of their own work. I just helped a guy set up Sailmail that had an army of workers on his boat. He is a 60+ y.o. lawyer with a new to him Lafite 44. He is now on his way to Mexico. He's read all the books and magazines, ordered all the stuff, had it installed and off he goes.
