Poorly built rudders, presumably, not necessarily spade.

It isn't difficult these days to build a spade rudder stronger that the rest of the boat. And on the other hand pretty easy to build a skeg or keel hung that is weak. If its a piece of boat you need (like the keel or rudder), you should build it strong enough to last more than 200 miles. Looking around a typical boat yard, the surprise isn't that some rudders fall off, it is that so few do.
