Listening to yesterdays radio recording, JAMMIN, a Catalina 42, lost steerage. 
The crew radioed in to report the shaft is still there and the steering linkage is fine, but there is no rudder effect. So either they lost the rudder or it's framework-keyway or something. That was yesterday, not sure if they were towed in or what.
