Hi Steve,
I've probably been as critical as anyone around here over the years about some of the aspects of a rally like the 1500. However, in my observation, the fleet has always been comprised of a decent percentage of boats well-suited for the passage, and being sailed by some very capable crews...
Some people simply enjoy the social aspect, and I think there's also a significant degree of the 'concession' being made to a reluctant spouse, who remains under the illusion that there is a realistic 'Safety in Numbers' thing going on... Nothing really wrong with that, if that's what it takes to get her to go along - as long as the skipper realizes there is no such thing, of course... (grin)
For certain, there are some boats and crews enticed into doing such a rally, who are not really ready for it... But, for the 5 days I spent in Hampton with the fleet 2 years ago, I was favorably impressed with much of what I observed... You'll notice I refrained from using the word 'most' instead of 'much', however... (grin)
Still, there's always some tidbits that make you wonder... One of the first incidents that's occurred this year, is that aboard a Hylas 54. The first time they go to unfurl the jib, the furling line "breaks"... WTF??? First time the headsail is unfurled at the start of an 1200 mile passage, on a boat probably worth $700K, something as critical as the furling line "breaks"? Seriously, how the hell does something like that happen? (grin)
yeah, I know, it's easy to play Armchair Quarterback from here... I'd love to be aboard that Kanter 65 right now, that guy seems to have the right idea... He's sailing higher than just about anyone else at the moment, I bet that will pay off in the end...
I'm really impressed with how the Hood/Wauquiez 38 - a sister to John Reid's new boat, being sailed by Andy Schell's dad - is going so far, as well... Wonder what the Southerly 57 is doing, looks like they're headed for Florida, instead?
Here's a look at that Kanter... Now, THIS would be Rallying in Style:
