Hi Jim,
Sounds like he's doing great, I think he made the smart move leaving early, although I bet he wishes they'd even left sooner, when the 1500 did...
Historically, the 1500 always runs the rhumbline down the beach to Hatteras, crossing the Stream abeam of the cape... With the forecast I'm seeing for the rest of the week, DISTANT STAR is in a far more favorable position than most of the 1500 fleet, with the exception of the Hanse 410 that got a late start coming down from the N... As I've mentioned, the guy in the 1500 that really has the right idea is TE MANA, the Kanter 65, he still seems to be sailing higher than anyone else...
Having met Bill Knowles, one of the founders of the Salty Dawg Rally, I know he's a big proponent of 'Riding the Curve' by starting out sailing a course considerably higher than the rhumbline to start, so you're better positioned to fall off further on down the road, when you start hitting the Trades... The other advantage to doing so, is keeping Bermuda in closer range in the event you might have to divert with a problem... This appears to be what DISTANT STAR is doing, good for them...
Presumably he's getting his weather from Chris Parker, along with the rest of the Salty Dawg fleet, so he's got the best in the business on his side...
best regards,
Jon
