We met people like that in Mexico! It was hard to believe that they made it that far and new almost nothing (except the cost) of system on the boat!
We are anchored out, miles from no place in the Sea of Cortez. Maybe 30 to 40 boats in all of the Sea at that time of the summer. We heard a call for help on the VHF. It tuns out the guy was having a problem with his diesel. He was many miles from from any small town. Another boat responded to his call before I got to the radio. I listened in. The guy who answered said he would help troubleshoot the problem. The calling guy, the one with the problem, explained in not so subtle terms, he was NOT asking for help fixing it, he was demanding a mech come out to the boat to fix it!!! He was not about to get his hands dirty.
From where he was, if I had needed the money I would have said sure, and charged $5,000.00 US as a minimum! As it was, I just let it go. I have no idea what happened after that.
Another time, I helped a lady set up her Sailmail on the HAM radio. After I got it going, she demanded that I 'hack" the system so she could have Pactor 3. After I explained I could not do that, or even would, she was less than plea pleasant on every meeting, and I am putting it nicely.
