Wow. That bucket steering doesn't sound easy to me.

And the locker door on the spinnaker pole only sounds a bit better. Good ideas in theory, but in the conditions that break rudders, few things are going to be easy to steer the boat.
Glad they made it. An Alden 54 lost it's rudder too and had to be towed back to the states so we can't just blame Catalinas. But I think you can deduce that many boats encountered conditions that were very hard to steer in.
