Boat Size in Caribbean Bound Rallies
Could be.....
Larger boats are more comfortable
In a general way.....
Yes but,
Yes, YEs, YES!!! That is my point also.
I went with the "Go small, go now" mind set
Exactly.
Did you ever regret upsizing from the CD30?
I never regreted going up in size to 38.
Shannon 38PH - what more could anyone want
I would be very happy with the Shannon 28
LOL according to Yachtworld, there is only 28 for sale "on the planet.".
OOPs... should say "only one 28 for sale on the planet..."
Problems with Yachtworld site....am I the only one?
works fine for me.
Used to here but last several weeks...freeze city, baby.
Maybe because they're using Flash
Never heard of it.
Not it, Him!
Whoever made that poster mebbe never saw the old Flash Gordon shorts with Buster Crabbe.
Adobe Flash
You know what, mebbe that's what's happening...thanks.
Likely ready for it's next "big price reduction" before it sells.
Yep..I've been watching the 30ft and under "great boats"
Been gone a while so late posting but
You have always said that (about everything being big!)
Moving up (or down)
Downsizing here - and changed boat types along the way
Upgrade from 24 to 30.
Could you attribute this to many boomers having the means today to do this, and these are not their first boats.
A parallel to housing is exactly right
One perspective from Sail 2012. "No More Vagabonds, Please"
Another from SAIL recently - "55 is the New 45"...
Perhaps sailed solo..
That was a single person's opinion followed by unanimous disagreement with it
Yup, boats keep getting bigger, that's no surprise...
I've met a number of owners whose 45-50 ft boat was their first….
I'm out of it these days. How many here- first boat was 45 to 50 feet, or even 40'?
I doubt anyone here fits that bill, we're mostly all Old School/Old Farts, after all...
True, and we're a very small group too, couple dozen posters, so when we spot a "trend".
Outbound 46. My dream vessel
Agreed... An Outbound scaled down to 40' would be perfect, for me...
Long is good
The ol' Hunter 50 was what your talking about
A 80's vintage Hunter 54 was only 11'
They already made one years ago.
Hand in hand with that is another trend...
NOW, that is scary!
Look at it another way... opportunity for cruisers with skills.
It CAN be, BUT....
He won't be cruising long!
The latest SAIL magazine has a feature on the "12 Top Bluewater Boats"...
Do ya think the list might be a function
Yep, me thinks...
Guess I am just ....
"I don't need to go with a group to be safe" I don't think that's fair to these sailors.
I admit that.....
That's an overly general statement about the HaHa.
When we met with folks....
You've done quite a bit Greg
THANKS Larry!!.....
This board has always been about bragging.
Funny....
Ya know Greg- I've been posting on here since back in the CWBB days
YES!
3.5' draft, that's something to brag about.
Can I join that?
This shows the skeg
Did you add the skeg custom?
No it's standard from the builder
I have never been up on multis
I think so too
Hey- I 10 runs about an hour north of me here on Matagorda Bay
Sounds like the start of a plan Charlie.....
Great- keep in touch. The email here is valid
Will do!
Ditto!
Gee, I've never thought bragging. I see folks sharing experieneces, opinions yes, but based on their own experiences.
Remember "show and tell" from grade school?
You nailed it Larry
Haven't seen fists flying in a while
Safety of the group.
Would a true Bluewater Boat be doing a rallie?
I think so......
Not the case here, it appears to me, rallies aren't all the same.
THAT sounds good!
Sure, why not...?
How about the 'baby Kanter'
Would a true Bluewater Boat be doing a rallie?
Regarding that Kantner
Nah, I imagine most of the watch will be kept from the settees inside the deckhouse... (grin)
Visibility
The Maine Cat is a beautiful boat
Yes, Larry
My general approach
I agree 100% with what you wrote
Moving On Up
Congrats. Bahamas is a great Place.
Nice news! Where did RAMBLE go to, John?
For sale . . .
I was reading Ramble's blog and it reminded
GOOD STORY!!!
Hard to top Aegean / Greece, that's for sure
Uh-oh... Does this mean I have to return your windvane...? (grin)
Naw, the grand kids can do the steering :- )
Well I'll be damned!
Long time . . .
For the 2nd year in succession, the 1500 departed a day ahead of schedule...
The SaltyDawg is off! Tom Brownell, Dave Evans boat hauler is locked in a race with another Hylas 54,....
I spoke to Tom today via satphone...
Wow! This is great. COuld you post how it's going,
It's striking how much further E he's sailed out of the Bay than the entire 1500 fleet...
Chris Parker is a huge asset to the community
Agreed. Our experience with Chris was great
I liked the humor of his predecessor and original 'David Jones'
Spoke again to DISTANT STAR...
Low 50's is a LOT of wind
This was only in some localized squalls...
thanks Jim. The spot has them too bunched up to see the departure.
You know it's been a pretty sporty ride, when the crew on a boat like a Hylas 54 reports...
I can't imagine how you would keep a large foredeck locker door watertight...
Hallberg-Rassy seems to do a pretty good job of it...
Update from Distant Star...
Sounds like a powerful boat sailed by an able crew.
The Sadler 34, RUFFIAN has finally shown on the logs page.
Not everyone is having fun out there. We met this couple on SERAFINA in Cuttyhunk.
An update from SERAFINA. Things are moderating for them, winds 25 to 35 knots,
Listening to yesterdays radio recording, JAMMIN, a Catalina 42, lost steerage.
Here's JAMMINs post today on their rudderless conditions on the stream.
She's got a good attitude
Good to see such a practical seamanlike attitude.
Looks like they are pretty experienced...
GREAT attitude!.....
An update from SERAFINA saturday.
And finally, this good news from SERAFINA, our friends on the Sadler 34, RUFFIAN have been found and get this,...
Wonder if I could find room for a nice stove like that??
The tough part is giving up the space at the cabin sole level.
Radiant heater location options are one of my
Have you sold your Maine Cat?
Yup
Aargh! And now bad news from RUFFIAN on the Radio Chat.
My sympathie3s if the4y ahve a Volvo 2003
Thinking it over, they never referred to that engine with any fondness. Bad sign.
Drat! The Volvo is toast. Cruisers worst nightmare begins, you have to sail her, no matter what.
Analysis....Idea......
Thanks Greg, I can't get a message to them so I'm a spectator.
Today, a new wind is blowing.
Why not just take the heat exchanger out of the picture
"Don't over think a problem FGS"
Everything is easy, from here.
Maybe I'm just a hacksaw and hammer kind of
You're more rigid than I. The only essential I think you need for offshore sailing,
I suppose you might think that. I've
Transmission and/ or precooler?
Another update from DISTANT STAR
Three boats have lost rudders?????
Well, I'd like to find out more....
Three boats have lost rudders?????
Poorly built rudders, presumably, not necessarily spade.
Press release from USCG 5th District
and the Virginian Pilot
Or can't make one....
Just heard that Cat is a (46-47' or so)Catana off Hatteras.
News that one crew was rescued.
And this news piece too.
More
So, maybe that last one is a rudder problem...
sorry this is disjointed. JAMMIN a Catalina 42 lost it's rudder, post below Jim.
Jammin Rudder problems...
And another rudder
Ouch - that makes 3 out of 4 Catalinas in the SDR?
A bit more
Here is an email describing the steering loss
Wow. That bucket steering doesn't sound easy to me.
If I owned a production boat, I might open up the rudder before I went offshore in the Winter..
Not blaiming any brand
I know you're not. It has been interesting to follow.
keyway gone south
Surprised they don't have a portable bilge pump of some sort.
